So having received some money for Christmas I thought I would lodge it into my Santander account. Went to the ATM put money in and it seemed to spin and take for ever, I then got and unknown error and it gave me my card back and that was that. Nothing lodged to my balance, I contacted Santander who told me they have no record off this but would open some kind of claim. Anyone else had this happen? I'm worried that it might come back out of the machine and go to someone else or something.

Yes, others have had this happen, but that's not important right now.
When they audit the cash, it'll be resolved.

What worries me is what if the atm decided to spit the cash out after I left?

It would have done that while you were still there, in which case you'd have got your cash back.

That's not good, I'd use a post office in future to deposit cash.

Why would the ATM suddenly decide to do that? Did you speak to a staff member at the time?

Bank was closed. I phoned the telephone banking and told them. Well I don't know how atms work, maybe the next person who used the machine would have got it

Just because something sometimes goes wrong doesn't mean you should never use it.

Happened to me, slightly differently in that it tried to return the cash I got £25 back from £60 deposit, all in fivers…… long story short called Santander at 0800 on Sunday morning had tried to deposit at 0700, they took details and timings and advised they’d look into it, it might be next working day. Money was credited to account by 1300, I was actually reassured at how quickly they resolved considering it was a Sunday. Hopefully same will happen with you.

This is what happened me. It tried to return some notes for whatever reason, I heard the machine spinning and counting for I’m sure a couple of mins, it then gave up gave an error message and gave me my card back
