Is Pier 1 still around? ›

In July 2020, Retail ECommerce Ventures (REV) bought the rights to Pier 1 and planned to revive the brand as an ecommerce store. At the end of October 2020, Pier 1 Imports closed its remaining stores and transferred its website to REV, which is doing business as Dallas-based Pier 1 Imports Online, Inc.

And, compared to the brick-and-mortar home goods stores where Pier 1 customers actually shopped, Pier 1 seemed expensive: the same or similar items were more affordable elsewhere.

The Downfall: A Series of Missteps 📉

Around 2005, Pier 1 Imports started facing increased competition from similar stores and discount stores like Walmart and Target. One of their biggest mistakes was shutting down their online store in 2007, making it easy for online competitors like Amazon to take their market share.

Omni Retail Enterprises is a new company that has acquired most of the assets from REV. The transaction that ceded the REV assets to Omni Retail terminated REV as an operating entity. With the transaction, Omni Retail is now the parent company of Pier 1.com, DressBarn.com, BodyBuilding.com and Mentorbox.com.

Home decor retailer Pier 1 has officially made a comeback by relaunching its online store after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and ceasing all operations. Its e-commerce store relaunched in October, according to a report by RetailDive. Roughly 540 brick-and-mortar stores and its online operations shuttered last fall.

May 23, 2024 : The retail landscape has shifted with the recent acquisition of Pier 1 Imports and Stein Mart by a consortium of investors backing Retail E-commerce Ventures (REV). This development comes after both companies filed for bankruptcy earlier in 2023. The terms of the deal were not publicly disclosed.

In 1962, with the help of the Tandy Corporation, Cost Plus Imports incorporated and opened franchised locations in California and Texas. The franchised stores would, by 1966, be renamed Pier 1 Imports, while Amthor's original chain retained the Cost Plus name.

Pier 1 filed for bankruptcy early on in 2020. It also tried and failed to find a buyer for the business. Because of COVID-19, the chain will be closing all stores still remaining in the United States—not half of their stores, as was announced earlier in 2020.

Pier 1 has 18,000 employees.

While Pier One stores are still open, the company is not allowing any gift card to be used, 30 days after each store reopened after the COVID-19 shutdown. Gift cards not used within those 30 days, now have no cash value.

Pier 21 closed its doors in 1971 and since has been rehabilitated by the Pier 21 Society as a museum to immigration.
